About the Lab
Background and Research Focus

The SensoriMotor Research Group at Arizona State University was founded in 2005 by Dr. Stephen Helms Tillery, who holds faculty appointments in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering as well as the Psychology Department and Barrow Neurological Institute. Steve came to ASU to work on cortical neuroprosthetics with Dr. Andy Schwartz. This work is steeped both in the science of cortical control and in bioengineering. The overall aim of the research carried out in the SMoRG lab is to both understand the intricacies of neural control of real arm movement, and to address crucial bioengineering issues in the design of neuro-electronic hybrid systems.

Dr. Helms Tillery is also interested in the basal ganglia, a set of forebrain nuclei which are associated with motor disorders like Parkinson's Disease and Huntington's chorea. We are using the systems and techniques developed for neuroprosthetics to study the basic physiology and pathophysiology of these structures.

Location and Affiliation

The SMoRG Lab can be found in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University. The department has been growing rapidly in recent years, spurred by the excitement and interest in Bioengeering and its myriad applications and benefits. The undergraduate program boasts more than 500 students, with a number of National Merit Scholars. More than 125 graduate students teach and conduct research under the guidance of 20 core and 11 research faculty members.

The department recently moved its research and core labs into a brand new facility, the Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building 1 (ISTB1), located near the center of campus. The department headquarters remains at ECG 334.
